NIFT / NID Preparation

I am in FC and the fee for my course is Rs 25000 per semester and there are 8 semesters over 4 years in a UG course.

NIFT has Undergraduate and Postgraduate courses. UG NIFT courses are for people fresh out of school. At least thats the minimum requirement. We do have students who finished grad but decided to give in to the artsy/design bug in them and joined a UG NIFT course.

You could enter the technology stream or the design stream

For NIFT exam design stream there is a written test + situation test.

The written test is different for students who opt for the fashion technology stream an dthose who opt for fashion design stream. I gave the exam for fashion design.

The written test has maths (10th level, basics), aptitude, logical ability, GK, design very simple stuff u dont need to prepare for.

It has 3 designing Qs, if I remember correctly. Each Q has choices.More…
In one you have to make a black n white sketch.
One of the two choices in this Q was a flyover when I sat for the exam.
I think it was testing your sense of PERSPECTIVE

The other one was to design a photo frame or a party invitation.
I think they just wanted to see AESTHETICS in this.

The last was to design a product.
One of the choices was a book rack.
I attempted this one and put silly lights all over the rack.
in this they wish to see your PRACTICAL sense, APPLICATION of design, INNOVATIVE ideas, USEFULNESS of ideas.

You sIt for the situation test if u get through the written exam.

This is held at NIFT centres.

You are given a set of things like fevicol, needle, thread, plastic sheets, straws, paper, ice cream sticks, aluminium foil.

Out of this stuff you have to make something.
We had to design a mall.

In the situation test they judge ur sense of 3 D, exploitation of the property of materials provided, INTEGRITY of your design.
They see how well it holds together, if you have considered various aspects such as storeys, fire exits, sections, facade of the mall. The whole thing should not look like its about to collapse.

for NID exam

You should know a bit of plans and elevations…

We had to make a plug from 3 different angles. So you should be able to visualize small objects to the tiniest detail. PERSPECTIVE is mega important. Rendering techniques such as shading the screw to make it look metallic is an added advantage.

Another object that could be asked is a stapler.

In case ur sense of perspecive is shaky, practice of isometry would help. Just take an object and draw it keeping all the vertical lines at 90 degrees to the horizontal, while making all the other lines at 30 degrees, or 45 degrees or 60 degrees. It is a set square and ruler pencil thing. practice would help.

You should know about colour - primary, secondary
This is not colour mixing as n light but as in pigments - paints
So you should know mixing what gives what

We were also asked to write a passage on an image which I later discovered was Van Gogh’s starry night. So you should be able to explain imagery in terms of emotions, feeling conveyed.

In the nid exam timing is critical.

if you get thru u go for the interview
