Shoulder Pads – 80s are Back

Shoulder Pads – 80s are Back
4
It seems like square shoulder pads are here to stay. Isabel Marant, Balenciaga, Jil Sander and other big designers thought that an exercise in style on strict and exaggerated suits, jackets and coats is a quest to create new forms of elegance. A kind of movement in a world in crisis and fight from the front in style. So this season it is true: overstated shoulder pads are back and our shoulders will be getting a lot of attention. For us women, giving attention to our shoulders makes us feel important, self-assured and fashionable. Browse for inspiration at Jil Sander, Saint Laurent and Marques Almeida. Needless to say that the most dominant version of the trend came from Balenciaga. Demna Gvasalia was not content with usual shoulder padding so he took proportions to an oversized level, showing radically structured silhouettes.

Let us celebrate the revival of the 80s with the return of power shoulders. Take your cues from Céline, DKNY, Michael Kors and just play with proportions. You can mix peaked shoulder pads with mini skirts or cropped trousers. Shoulder pads will be found in some women suits making her office look more sophisticated and bold. The perfect vibe for a #girlboss. Wearing a business dress with padded shoulders makes her look more fierce and independent.

The style is all about not wearing too much with it. So rather just go with the padded shoulders than adding too many details. The shoulders are standing out themselves, not need to transfer the attention somewhere else on this look. Minimalism is the key.

So the shoulder pads ruled the 80s. We have seen boxy shapes on the catwalk of Balenciaga (which might be slightly too extreme for some of us). If you are opting for more relaxed shapes, check out Chanel (a metallic power suit worn by supermodel Cara Delevigne) or Marni. Jacquemus used false shoulder pads for extreme off-the-shoulder necklines. Saint Lauren used tuxedo jackets and gold lame dresses with bolstered boxy shoulders. Well ladies, bit shoulders can offer you an effortless elegant look.

Lean back, get inspired by our street style looks and choose between structured blazers, shirts and coats with big shoulder silhouettes and, if you are ready, add a waist belt to your look to make your shoulders even stand out more.
